Located on the famous Murrumbidgee River in southern New South Wales, Shanty Reserve is located around a ten minute drive from the small town of Alfred Town. Shanty Reserve is one for the 4WD enthusiasts as it is difficult to access without one.
The Shanty Reserve camping ground is one of the harder campgrounds to access. The camping ground can be accessed via River Road, situated 200m east of Alfred Town. The 7km gravel road starts off okay but turns pretty bad as you get closer to the campsite. The road should only be accessed using a 4WD.
The camping ground offers around ten individual campsites. The terrain is pretty rough so we don't believe there is an actual best spot.
Although the Shanty Reserve campground is located on the mighty Murrumbidgee River , only limited fishing is available. Some great 4WD tracks also exist for those interested.
Best Time To Go
Given the road into the campground can get pretty bad at times, it is recommended that it is visited during the dryer months.
